| 2/11/2010 The Gals finish first weekend in the studio! Oh, the hora! |
|
So, does anyone remember that part of “I’m trying to break your heart” where Jeff Tweedy pukes all over the studio bathroom and blames it on the meds? That totally did not happen at our session…. What an incredible experience all the same. Granted I’m new to the recording process, but I was immensely impressed with the gals’ work this weekend. We spent our time well, supported each other, worked through conflicts well, got at least preliminary tracks down for all the songs, *and* got a line dancing lesson at the local bar. But those are just the material accomplishments- my greatest impression of the project so far has been our ability to support each other individually and collectively in developing this immaterial artisitic creation. When an artist goes to paint her greatest work, she is most undoubtedly working alone and finding her own inspiration and her own direction. But four people coming together in a studio to manifest some loosely structured vision of beauty is an unwieldy undertaking. Or so you’d think. Luckily, this group of 4 brought their own inspiration and can-do attitude to every session. As the newest member of the band, perhaps I’m the most impressionable but I did leave Saturday night feeling like it was one of the most fulfilling and important days of my entire life. I feel more than rewarded for the efforts we’ve put in to the musical process as a band and individually. After we had put in a 9 hour day, for example, I selfishly requested that everyone stay while I try out a few solos. Tired and drained, every one of the gals (and Nick!) let me have my time and stuck it out with me until 1 in the morning. I can only hope to have more experiences like this throughout my life. We may not agree on petty things, but when it comes to supporting each other in the our musical quest, we are an unbeatable team. Stay tuned for pictures of us narrowly escaping a stampede of line dancers. While eating free fajitas and watching the tightest wranglers you’ve ever seen, Gretchen uttered the greatest quote from that evening, “Can you see my horror?” to which Glen replied, “No, but I can see hers.” Did I also mention that our sound engineer may be the most patient man alive…. Nick, you da man. Love, The Gristle Gals |
